The natural force within each of us is the greatest healer of disease.”  Hippocrates

Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a beautiful, ancient wisdom.  A sanskrit word that literally translated means ayu meaning life and veda meaning science or knowledge.  Or as Vasant Lad calls it in his book ‘The Science Of Self-healing’. It is the oldest known system of medicine that is still practiced around the world today.

The aim in ayurveda is to return to a state of balance and bliss, in mind body, and consciousness, where we achieve optimum health.  As we are made up of the same basic elements as the whole universe, and are guided by the same cosmic intelligence, we are microcosms of the macrocosm.

We work with these elements through herbal medicine, massage, nutrition, spiritual insight, practical experience, scientific analysis, and artistic creativity to balance our doshas, or bio-energies and achieve this state of health.

Much of what we are learning from science today as radical breakthroughs in our understanding of the human body, ayurveda has been saying for thousands of years.

Things like the importance of the gut microbiome, which we are learning today is the cornerstone of our immunity and happiness, in ayurveda the gut is the centre of everything, this is where disease begins.

Or the importance of circadian rhthym on health, ayurveda says we should be living in harmony with all of nature’s rhthyms, including eating locally and seasonally.

As the sister science of yoga because both originate from the same vedic texts and the Samkhya philosophy of creation, many people in the West are familiar with yoga.  Ayurveda is said to be the healing arm to yoga, both work on the mind, body and consciousness.

Like yoga, ayurveda has the potential to guide us back home to ourselves and our natural state of health and wellbeing.  The journey involves balancing our doshas, or bio-energies, through dietary and lifestyle changes.

If you choose the path of ayurveda, you will learn greater self-knowledge.  We begin with a thorough analysis of your current state of health and imbalance.  After this, you will be provided with an individualised treatment plan that is tailored to your dosha and current health needs.  This will require work on your part, but you are creating a lifestyle change and taking back control of your own health.  This is the ultimate act of self-love, to finally say I deserve to be the healthiest and happiest version of myself and to make the diet and lifestyle changes because you are worth it.

Ayurvedic Approach

1.

Diet

Diet changes to bring greater balance.  Nature gives us all we need.  However, depending on our current state of balance, foods that we consume has a positive or negative impact, which lead us closer to, or further from health.  There is no one size fits all here and this is a personalised approach.

2.

Lifestyle

just like our diet, our daily choices and actions have an impact on positively or negatively impacting our state of balance.  Things like spending time in nature have a profoundly healing effect, whereas, late night partying, being stuck indoors, being in a job we hate, or relationship that’s toxic, are all factors that negatively impact our health.

3.

Ayurvedic Herbs

As part of the treatment, we may decide to use specially formulated herbal preparations.  These are used to stimulate digestive fire or digestive enzymes; enhance the body’s own natural detox processes that may have become blocked; calm the nervous system; balance hormones; promote natural sleep, to name just a few.

4.

Know Thyself

Going on an ayurvedic journey inevitably leads you down a path of self-discovery.  Far too often we are travelling the path of life with no conscious awareness of who we are; where what we truly love and therefore, where we are heading.  As we take responsibility for our own health, we regain the reigns of our life and live in a more conscious way.  Leading to a happier, more balanced and fulfilling life.
